Disease burden and excess mortality from coal-fired power plant emissions in Europe

چکیده
Abstract We studied the contribution of coal-fired power plant (CPP) emissions (SO 2 and NO x ) to air pollution levels annual excess mortality by cardiovascular respiratory diseases in Europe, based on fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations computed with a regional atmospheric chemistry-transport model. The health burden European CPP emission-induced PM2.5, estimated Global Exposure Mortality Model, amounts at least 16 800 (CI95 14 800–18 700) deaths per year over domain. identified an underestimation magnitude correcting for it doubles CPP-attributed 33 900 000–37 600) year. Due non-linearity exposure-responses, especially relatively low concentrations, these estimates represent lower limits possible benefits EU-28 states. emission phase-out would avoid 18 400 000–20 500) annually assuming background PM2.5 10 ? g m ?3 , 25 500 22 600–28 200) if from other sources are reduced 50% parallel, 105 89 900–121 drastically reducing anthropogenic 2.4 that represents threshold impacts. Depending scenario, large gains can be achieved emissions, which calls coordinated control strategies level.

Radionuclide emissions from a coal-fired power plant.
Current study concerns measurement of radioactivity levels in areas surrounding a 2420 MW thermal power plant fueled predominantly by bituminous coal. The concentrations of (226)Ra, (232)Th and (40)K in onsite bottom-ash were found to be 139 Bq/kg, 108 Bq/kg and 291 Bq/kg, respectively, the levels for these radiolnuclides in soil decreasing with distance from the power plant. At the plant perim...
متن کاملAir Pollutant Emissions from Coal-fired Power Plants. 2.
In order to investigate the factual air pollutant emissions from Henan’s power sector in 2010, SO2, NOx and PM emissions from 24 generating sets from 15 coal-fired power plants have been measured. It is shown that SO2 emission values from 22 of 24 generating sets conform to the requirements, which is causing by the high performance of the flue gas desulfurization system. Much higher NOx emissio...
متن کاملEmissions of sulfur trioxide from coal-fired power plants.
Emissions of sulfur trioxide (SO3) are a key component of plume opacity and acid deposition. Consequently, these emissions need to be low enough to not cause opacity violations and acid deposition. Generally, a small fraction of sulfur (S) in coal is converted to SO3 in coal-fired combustion devices such as electric utility boilers. The emissions of SO3 from such a boiler depend on coal S conte...
